Bogota Skyscraper Steps Up

Stepped skyscrapers have long been popular, but few designs have taken it quite as far as this new tower planned for Bogota in Columbia.

The development is actually a collection of three interlinked towers called BD Bacata after the area it will stand in. They will be 240 metres, 200 metres, and 120 metres in height with the main tower rising to 66 floors with 114,384 square metres of space within. Along with the other buildings they are divided into a number of uses that include 396 apartments, 138 office suites, a 542 room hotel, two restaurants, and a sky bar.

Designed by Alonso-Balaguer y Arquitectos Asociados the towers occupy two opposing corners and thus feature blocks that that rise up in height with the third shorter interconnecting block between them that's linked by a series of sky bridges.

The tallest tower, the hotel, has seven vertical sections each with sky gardens in between and stepping towards the corner being narrower than the last creating a dramatically slender effect despite the bulk having been broken up horizontally. The shorter office and residential tower also has a stepped profile but with the lower height and less slender upper levels the end result is not as spectacular.

Already approved, BC Bacata is due to start construction later in 2010 for a 2013 finish.
